My first long workout day. I went to a regular pool and swam for 1 hour.

The strategy in dealing with walls to slow down, turn and then resume in the opposite direction without pushing off. Unfortunately, because the pool was only 25yds in length, this plan slowed down my pace considerably, as by the time I would get crankin' I would reach another wall again.

1.5mi in 1 hour today. :(

I should try to find a longer pool. In the meantime, does anyone have any thoughts on how I can best simulate an open water swim in a pool? Any comments would be most welcome!

Maybe you should just swim in circles (or squares) in the "free-for-all" area of the pool. That way you don't have to make any sharp turns at all and can just keep swimming.

yeah i realize this isn't a pool solution, but maybe you could find a swimming machine? i saw one on a gadget program once (so i don't know how prevalent they are) but they look like rowing machines except you lie down flat and move your arms etc.

what's the temperature of the water going to be like? will you be wetsuiting? or is hawaii always warm enough. maybe you can wetsuit it out in the bay or something just to practice?

You also need to practice swimming w/ a current so that (1) you don't tire out trying to go against it and (2), you don't drift out to sea, no matter how nice and warm Hawaii may be :) http://www.waterworldswim.com/workouts/default.asp
